چکیده

This is the seventh edition of the Colorado State University (CSU)-CHILL newsletter which we distribute on an annual basis, near the start of the academic year. The newsletter is intended to provide information to the community regarding research, education, and refurbishment activities of the CSUCHILL facility. In April 1995 Colorado State University was awarded a second five-year Cooperative Agreement from the National Science Foundation for operation and maintenance of the CSU-CHILL, a 10 cm, dual polarized Doppler radar. The radar is presently operational near Greeley, CO (located approximately one mile north of the Greeley-Weld County Municipal Airport), situated on an eighty acre agricultural site owned by CSU.

A Description of the CSU–CHILL National Radar Facility

The subject of this paper is the Colorado State University–University of Chicago–Illinois State Water Survey (CSU–CHILL) National Radar Facility’s S-band polarimetric research radar. Key features of this system include polarization agility (provided by the dual-transmitter, dual-receiver design), a recently updated signal processor, and a low (234 dB, two way) integrated cross-polar ratio (ICPR...

Early Online Release Transformation of the Csu-chill Radar Facility to a Dual-frequency, Dual-polarization, Doppler System 2

5 This paper describes the transformation of the CSU-CHILL National Radar Facility from 6 a single-frequency (S-band) dual-polarization Doppler weather radar system to a dual7 frequency (S and X band) dual-polarization Doppler system with coaxial beams. A brief 8 history regarding the development of dual-wavelength radars is first presented. In the past 9 dual-wavelength measurements were used ...

The Differential Phase Pattern of the CSU CHILL Radar Antenna

. The ~easurement of the differential propagation phase and copolar correlation coefficient are affected by the d1fferent1al phase pattern of the antenna system when operating in an alternate horizontal and vertical transmitting scheme. Direct phase pattern measurements of a large dish such as that of the CSU CHILL is difficult because of the need to obtain phase reference. A simple technique i...

P10r.4 Validation of First Generation Casa Radars with Csu-chill

The National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center for Collaborative Adaptive Sensing of the Atmosphere (CASA) [McLaughlin et al., 2005] will be deploying the first generation of an automated network of four low-power, X-band, polarimetric, Doppler radars in Oklahoma in spring 2006. This radar network, known as NETRAD, will map precipitation and detect, locate and track severe weather ...

Observations of Quasi-Symmetric Echo Patterns in Clear Air with the CSU–CHILL Polarimetric Radar

On a few occasions during the summer and fall of 2002, and again in the fall of 2003, the Colorado State University (CSU)–University of Chicago–Illinois State Water Survey (CHILL) S-band polarimetric Doppler radar observed dumbbell-shaped radar echo patterns in precipitation-free air returns. Dumbbell shaped refers to two distinct and quasi-symmetrical regions of echo surrounding the radar. The...
